Race Review: Racing to the Castle at the Princess Half Marathon // Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend 2020 ๐Ÿ‘‘ Day 3

This post is part of a series about my trip to Walt Disney World for Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend February 21-23, 2020.
Make sure you check out my day 1 post  & day 2 post first!

I actually got a pretty decent amount of sleep before race #2 of the weekend which I was happy about because Sunday was going to be a looooong day! I was up with my alarm at 3AM and immediately started getting into my Provincial Belle costume. I knew I needed to be Belle for the Princess Half because she's the Disney Princess that I relate to the most. I really loved putting my costume together and I think I really came out great! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“š

(No, I did not run with the book - it was purely for the photo! ๐Ÿ˜‚)

Had to snap a quick mirror pic before headed out the door to send to Brett with my good morning text!

One of my favorite details of my Belle costume were my socks! My friend Shannon got me these for Christmas and I thought they went along perfectly with my costume. If you can't tell, they are banned book socks with the titles of banned books on one sock and the titles blacked out on the other. I feel like Belle would be a huge fan of these socks! Here's a close up:

We were a little worried about what getting to Epcot would be like when we didn't have our own transportation. Luckily I had scheduled an Uber the night before to pick us up at 3:45 and we were able to catch a ride no problem. I will say that Ubers are in high demand at that time because you have literally thousands of people trying to get to the park at the same time. Our driver's phone kept going off with ride requests during the 15 minute ride to Epcot. I would recommend if you are planning to do an Uber or Lyft to get to the park on race morning, make sure you're scheduling it in advance because even though there's drivers out and about, everyone is trying to book a ride!

Similar to the 10K we got to Epcot around 4am. There were significantly more people at this race (22,800!) so it was a bit more of a process of getting to the staging area. Cassie and I also both had bags to drop since we were planning to head right to Magic Kingdom after the race, so we had a few more stops to make before we could really enjoy the morning. After we dropped our gear and got ourselves situated, we tried our luck again at a pre-race character photo. We opted to wait in line for Queen Minnie since she had the shortest line. We waited in line for about 40 minutes or so and got to the point where there was maybe two more groups ahead of us before they brought Queen Minnie in! ๐Ÿ˜ซ So heartbreaking! Again, if you're hoping to guarantee yourself a character photo, make sure you're getting the the staging area much earlier than we did. Either way, we got cute pics of our costumes with the character backdrop before headed to the corral!

Because the race field is so much larger, the corrals need to be placed on a larger stretch of highway on the park property to accommodate all of the runners. That means we did have to walk a bit away from the staging area. A lot of folks say it's a mile walk but I don't think it felt more than half a mile. Either way it really wasn't that bad of a walk, so I wouldn't stress too much about this portion of the half!

Again I was placed in the last corral so I had a bit of a wait ahead of me. The way the corrals were placed (A-F were on a straightaway section of the highway while G & H were on the opposite side), they were able to get almost all of A-F out in about 15-20 minutes. However because G & H had to cross over and kind of zig-zag their way to the starting line, it took another 40-50 minutes for me (I was close to the front of H) to get up to the start. Luckily I don't mind waiting too much, but seeing how quicky A-F got out on the course definitely motivated me to remember to submit my proof of time for my next Disney race. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Standing around is tough on the feet! But before long I was finally running one of my bucket list races - the Disney Princess Half Marathon! ✨

As expected, being in the last corral there was a lot of walkers and slower runners that I had to dodge around, but there were plenty of stretches where I felt like I could run at a regular pace. I did keep the pace quite easy (I think I stayed in the 11min range for the entire race where I could help it) because I just wanted to take in the race and enjoy myself. This is a race I've wanted to run for the better part of a decade so I wanted to enjoy it! Around mile 2.5 you get to the Magic Kingdom toll plaza. Even though you have a couple more miles to go to actually get to Main Street, it's an exciting milestone of the course!

Even though there's quite a bit of highway between the start and getting to Main Street, there was so much entertainment along the way. There were a couple of character stops, 3 or 4 marching bands and drumming groups, and the video screens playing Cinderella (who the race was themed after)! My only big complaint for the race was that there was a huuuuuge hold up at the Ticket & Transportation Center before you get to Main Street around mile 4. I guess there's a bunch of construction going on right outside the TTC and the course narrows to 1 lane, so as us back-of-the-pack-ers got to that point the bottle neck was so bad that the group came to a dead stop as we waited our turn to get through. I'm honestly not sure if there was much they could do to alleviate that, but it was my singular dislike about this course so I think that's pretty good!

Right before mile 5 you finally make your way through the gates of Magic Kingdom, turn the corner, and see Cinderella's Castle come into view! It's just as magical as you imagine it to be. I believe I cheered as I finally saw the castle because it was what I had been waiting for after all this time! I had to stop and walk my way up Main Street to really make sure I took it all in.

Magic Kingdom was a lot of fun because there were so many opportunities for interaction! There were so many photographers around the park, especially around the castle, characters at almost every turn, and spectators cheering you on everywhere. Even though you're only in the park for .8 miles of the course, there's really so much to enjoy. According to my Garmin this was my longest mile of the race at 18:07, so you can tell I really enjoyed myself! I also felt confident that I put in enough distance between myself and the back of the pack that I was no longer at risk of getting swept, so I stopped for my very first character photo...

DOPEY!!! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’œ I have dreams of completing the Dopey Challenge one day so I knew I had to stop and grab a photo with him for good luck on my future attempt at 48.6. After experiencing Princess Weekend I have a feeling it'll be sooner rather than later! ๐Ÿ˜‰

There were plenty of photo opportunities around the castle. They have several lines of photographers right in front of the castle, as well as a couple of other angles so you definitely won't miss your opportunity for a good castle photo! I had to stop for at least one more for good measure. ๐Ÿฐ

You exit Magic Kingdom at mile 6 and enter into a loooong stretch of road which is commonly known as the most difficult part of the race, simply because in comparison to running through Magic Kingdom it is quite boring! They did a great job of keeping the fun going on the course during this, though. I think I counted a total of 6 or 7 character photo stops, a few video screens, a DJ, and a marching band, so there's still plenty to look at and interact with! I think my least favorite part of this section of the course in the fact that the turns on this stretch are banked which are really difficult to run on. These kinds of roads really bother my ankles so I tried my hardest to stay at the highest part of the road so I wasn't running *completely* sideways. This only happens a couple times, though, and the rest of the road is fairly flat!

Around mile 11 I hopped in line for another character photo before heading into Epcot - Suzy & Perla! They were so cute and I was excited to get a photo with characters from the movie the half was themed after. After that photo it was time to finally make my way back into Epcot and get ready for the finish! You actually don't run that much in Epcot which I was surprised about. We ran so much in Epcot during the 10K that I figured it would be similar during the half, but you only run maybe a mile backstage and quarter mile inside the park. They had Panchito out in Mexico and there were maybe two people in line for photos, so I made sure to stop for him as well!

Shortly after Mexico was the mile 13 marker and the finish line! They had a couple of characters out at the finish which I was so excited about! They had Donald dressed up in his knight gear as well as *gasp* QUEEN MINNIE! I was so pumped to get a photo with both of them, especially Queen Minnie who I had narrowly missed getting a photo with that same morning. I didn't care that I was literally 10 feet from the finish, I had to stop and get a couple more photos before finishing the race!

After I snagged my photos I floated across the finish line, so happy that I had finally gotten the opportunity to run this bucket list race. I don't generally pay money for race photos but I knew I had to buy myself this finish line snap. I look exactly how I felt coming across that finish line - SO happy! ✨

(I think I might be the happiest person in this entire photo haha)

I came across the finish line and snagged my finisher's medal, which was probably my favorite medal of the weekend. A kind stranger took my finish photo and I took hers (one huge plus of the Disney races that I experienced - everyone is willing to take a photo for you!), I was sprinkled with pixie dust, and I made my way over to the finisher's area.

Almost directly after I took the above photo my legs started cramping up HARD. It was super painful to walk which was concerning, but I waddled my way over to the finisher's area to collect my Fairy Tale Challenge medal. I was shocked at how large the medals from the weekend were. They were all SO gorgeous and I could not stop touching and looking at them. ๐Ÿ˜‚

After collecting my challenge medal I finally linked back up with Cassie and we also met up with her family who was joining us for a day in Magic Kingdom! Before exiting the finish area we stopped to grab an Ever After Ale which was a beer brewed especially for Princess Weekend - a blueberry lemonade beer with GLITTER! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ✨ It was actually so yummy and a great treat after a long morning. We sipped on our beers as we made our way to the monorail for Magic Kingdom.

We got to the Ticket & Transport Center and unfortunately at this point I started feeling pretty awful. I was hopeful that the way I felt would pass and I could push through the day. We got through the gates of Magic Kingdom around noon and I just started feeling worse and worse. I was getting a migraine, I was overheating, I hadn't really eaten all that much, my legs were cramping, and I had just been on my feet since 4am. We were able to squeeze in one attraction - the Monster's Inc. Laugh Factory - before I kind of threw in the towel. I knew I was going to make the rest of the group miserable because I was feeling miserable, so I opted to head back to our room to see if I could rest for a few hours and feel better. Cassie's brother reassured me that I could definitely leave the park and come back no problem, which basically decided it for me. I may had tried to push through if that wasn't the case, but knowing that I was allowed to come back made heading back an obvious choice.

I was really, really bummed at this point because I had been looking forward to this portion of the trip so much and I was frustrated that I felt so terrible. (My stupid migraines have ruined many a fun moment for me.) I left the park feeling pretty badly for myself, not knowing if I was going to be able to feel good enough to come back. I wanted to take some medal photos before I left, though, so I made sure to snap this pic before leaving:

They're all so beautiful! ๐Ÿ˜

I got back to the room around 2pm, showered, stuffed my face with food delivered by Uber Eats, and rested my legs for a couple hours. Honestly this was 100% the right move because by 4:30pm I was ready to call another Uber back to the park and I was in Magic Kingdom again by 5:15. Lesson learned - I am not someone who can hit a park right after a race! I'll keep that in mind when I return for Dopey in a few years. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Luckily by the time I linked up with the group again I didn't really miss too much action! My fast pass for Haunted Mansion was still active so I got to hop on that ride while the group enjoyed Dole Whips. We made our way back in front of the Castle as the sun was setting for some gorgeous medal photos that Cassie's brother took. I was shocked at how amazing the photos came out - it didn't look like I was in pain at all! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Kyle is such a great photographer so shout out to him for taking our photos!

You can follow Kyle here and here!

We ended the night by riding Pirates of the Caribbean, then I jumped on my fast pass for Space Mountain which was one of my favorite rides when I was 8 and is still one of my favorite rides at age 29! It was around 9pm by the time we were done wandering the park and I was so happy that I was able to feel well enough to come back and hang with everybody!

All in all, Princess Half Weekend was all I dreamed it could be and more. I definitely want to come back for more runDisney races in the future. The entire weekend was put on so well and I feel so lucky to have gotten to experience it first hand after dreaming about it for years. I totally recommend taking part if you have the chance!

Of course, I vlogged all weekend long and you can check that video out here:

I also did a runDisney tips video. I didn't take your ~typical~ approach to participating in a runDisney event so I thought I'd share my experience to let folks know that you can still have a blast without doing what you're *supposed* to do when it comes to these events!

2020 Half Marathon Schedule (So Far!)

Life in my neck of the woods has been a lil crazy lately in both my work and personal life (as it always gets this time of year!), so I apologize for the lack of life updates from me over here on the blog. I hope you all enjoyed my posts about my New Orleans trip (which you can find here, here, and here) because I had a blast sharing them with you! I'm hoping once I'm done with travel post-LA weekend (so mid-March ๐Ÿ˜‚) I'll be able to get back to my normal blogging rhythm and update you on my non-running aspects of my life, but until then just know that even though I've been busy I've been having a great time!

I'm about to jet off to Orlando for Princess Half Marathon weekend and I am oh so excited! ✈ There will definitely be Disney posts and vlogs coming your way when I return so get excited for that! I feel like my full marathons get the bulk of the attention on my blog and socials, but because I'm about to embark on my first half marathon of the year, I thought I would highlight all of the half marathons I'm planning to run in 2020. (So far! There's always room for more. ๐Ÿ˜‰) I really love the half marathon distance because I feel like while it's still a huge undertaking when it comes to endurance, it's also a distance where I feel comfortable trying to push the pace on. I hope to see some of you at these races throughout the year!

Sunday, February 23
Orlando, FL

The Disney Princess Half Marathon has been on my bucket list since I was in college and I am SO JAZZED that I finally get to run it this Sunday! Like I said, I'll be posting plenty about my experience here and on my channel, but definitely follow along on Twitter and Instagram as I'm sure I'll be making plenty of posts in real-time. ๐Ÿ‘‘

Sunday, May 3
Providence, RI

I love staying a bit local for half marathons and shorter distances. It allows me to make it either a morning or day trip instead of it being a multi-day affair like my marathons tend to be. I'm extra excited that my Half Fanatics membership got me a baller discount for the Providence Half Marathon this May because I've been eyeing this race for a while! Providence is only about 30 minutes from where I live so it'll be a great way to spend a Sunday morning after a crazy spring semester!

Saturday, August 1
New London, CT

I ran this race last summer and I was totally impressed by it! This is a race that runs completely on runner donations and if you can't afford a donation you are still able to run it for free. I honestly wasn't expecting much more than an outlined course but I was blown away at how much volunteer support they had, how many water stations were available, and the fact that there were finisher's medals! This race is only open to 1,000 runners and the registration doesn't open until May, but I totally want to go back and maybe make this a recurring race for myself!

Sunday, October 4th
Hampton, NH

As I mentioned in my previous post about this race, I have been wanting to run the Smuttynose Rockfest Half for years, so I was pumped that I was added to the BibRave Pro team that was running this event! I am so excited to return to my home state and run along the coast, and I'm especially excited to experience the post-race party. There is plenty more on this race to come, so stay tuned! If you're planning on registering (which you definitely should!) use the code "SAVE10" for 10% off your registration!

The last half I have on my schedule (for now!) is the Mount Dora Half Marathon! I love me a good, festive race during the holidays and because now I'm usually down in Florida around Christmas, I'm always looking for a race that is near my parents. Luckily, the opportunity presented itself for me to run the Mount Dora Half in December! We have quite a bit of time before this race comes around (just a cool 10 months ๐Ÿ˜‚) but I'm excited for the festive feel of this small town race! Use the code "BIBRAVE" for 10% off your registration and join me in Florida this December!

I'M IN!!!: Mount Dora Half Marathon 2020

Disclaimer: I received entry to the Mount Dora Half Marathon to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

In super exciting news, I was selected to run the Mount Dora Half Marathon this December with Team Bib Rave! ๐Ÿงก I will be joining fellow BibRave Pros Shannon and Samantha for this race. You should totally go check out their fantastic blogs when you get the chance! Shannon's blog is Girls Got Sole and Samantha blogs over at Samantha's Running Adventures.

You may know that I fly down to Florida each Christmas to visit my parents. I always look around for a race to run every time I visit, and this is one that has caught my eye a couple of times. It's a little under two hours away from my parents' house, but it is quite close to the Orlando airport so I'm thinking I'll be able to easily swing this festive half during my visit if I plan it well! Luckily I have basically the entire year to plan logistics. For now I'm just excited that I'll be rocking my orange and closing out the year running a super festive race!

The cool thing about this race that it's actually a weekend long event! There is a 5K on Saturday and a half marathon on Sunday. I'm going to try to convince my parents to join me for the weekend and participate in the 5K as well. There's also the opportunity to participate in the Dora Double which is to run in both races. I really have my eye on this because folks who complete the Dora Double not only get a medal for each race but an additional award as well! #SWAG Last year they gave out a commemorative pint glass. I wonder what it will be for 2020?

Dora Double 2019 award!

Since this race is still so far away, I'm going to have a *lot* more information to share with you over the next 11 months. (It's almost hilarious how far away this race is, but I'm just so excited!! ๐Ÿ˜‚) I should be getting a discount code here pretty soon, and I'll definitely be highlighting my training for this course as well (can you say HILLS?!). I hope you all will join me, and if you decide you'd like to, make sure you register quickly! There are only 1,500 entries available for this race and they will fill fast. I think it's going to be such a fun time and a great way to get fit & festive right around the holidays.

Have you run Mount Dora in the past? Let me know in the comments!

Race Review: Ocean Beach/John & Jessie Kelley Half Marathon 2019

In August I participated in the Ocean Beach/John & Jessie Kelley Half Marathon down in New London, Connecticut. I was searching for a half marathon to round out the summer and came across this one that just so happened to be free for runners. You can read more about the story of the race here, but I thought it was so cool that a race that has been around for as long as this one has still operates solely off donations and that folks who love to race can participate for free if they would like. I donated some money to the race while I was signing up because I thought the initiative was just so cool and something I hadn't seen before. I wanted to keep it alive!

I tried to keep in mind that this race was free as I was evaluating how things were being run. One of the first things that I really noticed was that bib pick up was a little on the chaotic side. There really wasn't a lot of direction as to where to go and how to pick up your bib, so it was pretty overwhelming trying to swim through the crowds and figure out where I was supposed to go. I was a little worried that that was going to be reflective of the entire race, but thankfully that was the only real complaint I had about how the race was managed all day.

Race morning was absolutely gorgeous and sunny, but It was going to be a HOT ONE. That always makes me pretty nervous when I'm running a long distance, but I wasn't really trying to strive for a fast time. I was just there trying to put some miles toward my Newport Marathon training and enjoy the scenery. I opted to take the run super easy and one mile at a time.

The race limits the field to the first 1,000 registrants and it was completely sold out! I love when I'm part of a sell out field. That's how I know I'll be running with folks nearby the entire race. I made some small talk with the runners around me as we awaited the national anthem and did some warm ups and stretches, and before I knew it we were off on the course.

I felt super nauseous for the first three miles of the race. I was honestly questioning whether or not I should take a DNF because the starts just were not aligning for me, but eventually I settled into the race and I started to feel better. I just put one foot in front of the other and kept on trucking through the heat and humidity. The route was absolutely gorgeous and we got so many waterfront views. It's one of those races that just make you feel so lucky to be outside enjoying the scenery, you know?

I will say that the course support for a local race was so great. There were water stops every mile and a half or so, all with enthusiastic volunteers cheering us on. One of my favorite stations was mile 8 where they were handing out bags of ice cubes. I didn't know how much a needed a bag of ice cubes until I was handed a bag of ice cubes, haha. I walked for a while with the bag on my head as the ice cubes melted down. The community was also so great with cheering on the runners. I passed so many houses that just had their hoses going for runners to run through and get cool refreshing relief from the unrelenting heat. I love when neighbors do that along the course!

This half was one of my longer halfs to date, which between the heat and my feeling gross for the first quarter of the race makes a whole lot of sense. I ended up finishing at 2:46:08 and crossed the finish line to so many friendly faces. The race itself had a 3 hour time limit but it seemed like a decent amount of runners just stuck around to cheer everyone across the finish line, which was so nice to see! I also stuck around for a while longer and cheered the last few runners through. I love that feeling of camaraderie at a race! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Even though the race was free to participants, you still got a medal at the end of the race which I wasn't really expecting and was so pleasantly surprised! I figured that because the race is free that it was just going to be a get-your-bib-and-run situation, but you still got a medal to commemorate your accomplishment which was amazing! They were also giving out waters (which I obviously took) and I believe they were giving away some bananas as well. They also had a hose-shower at the finish line to cool off with. Not too shabby for a free race, in my opinion!

Overall this race was great, and something that I'm definitely considering participating in every year. I don't really have a race that I always run on an annual basis, but I can totally see this race being that race for me. Such a fun, well put together race for the very very affordable price of free! ๐Ÿ˜

Race Review: Sour Apple Half Marathon (BEDA Day 6)

Last month I traveled down to Smithfield, Rhode Island to run the Sour Apple Half Marathon. This race was extremely local to me - about a half hour away! - which isn't very usual for the races I sign up for. It was nice to be so close to the race I was running for a change and that I didn't have to use up the majority of my day traveling back and forth. The race was put on by Ocean State Multisport which is an organization that puts on lots of races throughout southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I hadn't run one of their races before but I honestly had such a great time that I know I'll definitely be running another race of theirs in the future!

The morning of this race was SO HOT. Before we started, the race director brought all the runners in for a quick chat (the race field was so small that we could all gather around him! ๐Ÿ˜‚) and let us know that the race staff had put his personal cell phone number on every one of the directional signs throughout the course and if for whatever reason we could not finish the race, to please call them so they could come pick you up. He encouraged the runners to "not be a hero" when it came to the heat, and if we had to take a DNF that day that he would provide a free race entry for next year. That was super encouraging and one of the reasons why I love to run these smaller races from time to time. I tend to prefer larger races, but things like that are not things that happen at bigger races at all!

Right before the gun went off for the start, a runner behind me said something that both made me laugh and kept me motivated:

"13 miles for breakfast, not bad!"

That phrase stuck in my head throughout the entire race and I'll probably always thing of it when I run half marathons from here on out! The course itself was extremely hilly and rural. The first two and last two miles were the only miles that were in neighborhoods. The rest of the course was through heavily wooded back roads and several farms. The good part about this was that most of the course was shaded which was honestly a life saver. I'm not sure if I would have been able to make it through the race had it not been for the shade.

Even though we were running through quite a bit of country, the race did a great job of providing plenty of aid stations (one about every 1.5 miles) and lots of directional signage so you knew exactly where you going. One of the BEST things that the race provided on the course was BLUE GATORADE! I swear every race that I've been to, if they've offered Gatorade it's usually always lemon-lime flavor, so it's really an exciting novelty when there's a different kind. I was so excited that I had to snap a photo. ๐Ÿ˜‚

The later miles of this race were really the hilliest, which posed a fun challenge when you're totally gassed ๐Ÿ˜‚ Even though I was tired and hot, I wanted to make the most of the beautiful scenery so I tried to have fun with it by snapping photos and commemorating the race!

One of the cooler parts of the race was that after you finished, they provided you a little receipt with your race results. I'm not really a runner that will put a lot of weight on where I placed or even really my time (#finishlinesnotfinishtimes), but it was cool to have a tangible piece of how my race went! The medal itself was adorable and colorful as well, so I was happy to have a couple of fun post-race takeaways.

While this race did not have a ton of bells and whistles, it was an extremely welcoming environment and the race staff and volunteers were excellent. The course was beautiful and the support on the course was top notch. Honestly, it was everything that I could possibly need in a race, and it was right in my backyard. I was super happy with how the day went and I will definitely be running another Ocean State Multisport race!

Oh, and also I was able to get some post-race Marylou's, which is always a bonus. ๐Ÿ˜‰
