Sloooooooooooooooow

While summer is my absolute favorite time of year, I find it to be the most boring time in my work life. Students are gone, summer projects (which equates to LOTS of reading and writing) are in full swing, and things are less demanding. I know my mind needs this rest but sometimes (a lot of times) it's just too dang slow for me! Once I have time to recover from the spring semester (which honestly is like a month and a half) I'm raring to go once again. Why do I do this to myself? πŸ™ƒ

Everyone has a colleague that will come to mind when they see this πŸ˜‚

This week has been my first week back to formal marathon training. I'm only two training runs in so far but I'm feeling very motivated to stay on top of the training runs I need to do. I haven't had a successful training cycle in YEARS and it would be awesome to see how I perform on race day if I actually act like a somewhat committed runner and do what I'm supposed to do while I train. πŸ˜‚ I have noticed that I'm much more exhausted this week so my body is really confused as to what I'm doing, but it's a good tired! Even though I have tomorrow off from work, I'm still going to get up early for a long run before the sun pops out and melts us all. (Usually long run days are on Sunday, but we have friends visiting this weekend so I want to get some mileage out of the way so I can spend time with them! I've even roped one of them in to coming to the gym with me on Saturday morning before we go play in Boston. SEE! COMMITTED! πŸ˜‚) I'll be posting my training updates on Sundays for anyone who is interested.

I'm really enjoying being a little bit more on the townie side these days. We lived in our hometown for three years between 2012-2015 before returning in late March. We live right in the downtown area and I'm loving the fact that I can walk almost anywhere that I need to get to. Our local library is a nice 10 minute walk from our house so I've been taking full advantage of that, we're surrounded by parks, and there's a solid number of restaurants and shops that we frequent. We're truly integrating into our hometown and I'm loving it!

On one of my library walks the other day I came across a youth art project called Kindness Rocks. The idea is that kids in our area paint a bunch of rocks with kind words or scenes on them and lay them out in a public place and you can take one for yourself, give one to someone who needs one, or place one in a spot where you think someone who could use one might see it! As I was admiring the artwork I found one that - oddly enough - had my name on it. I had to take a photo!

{source}
One big positive of the slower times in the office is the fact that I have time to be a bit more social with my colleagues. Today I was able to reconnect with my friend Tyler who works in the ResLife department over coffee. I was already feeling caffeinated enough to get through the rest of the morning, so I opted for the new KitKat Coolata (left) that Dunks has released for the summer. Oh my goodness. If you like sweet treats, I would HIGHLY recommend this delightful beverage! It's vanilla and caramelly with chunks of KitKats throughout. *DROOL* I don't think I could handle any more than a small size of this because it is so sweet but it's super delicious and totally worth a try!

I really can't believe we are at the end of June already. I don't know if it's the fact that I had a vacation in the middle of the month, the fact that I've been so hyper-focused on completing 30 books (as of writing this I'm 4 books away from achieving this insane goal! πŸ˜±), or just that life is unfair and your downtime goes by so much fast than your busy hectic times πŸ˜‚ but I hate the thought that in less than two months we'll be back up to our eyeballs in the insanity of the school year! I'm really excited for what the rest of the summer has in store, though. I'll be focusing on my training mostly, but our friends from NJ are visiting over this upcoming weekend, we'll be heading to New Hampshire for the 4th of July next week, we'll be going to a concert the week after that, I have a few half marathons planned, and I may even have some more time to fit in some more time off, encouraged by my boss. I want to do everything in my power to recharge my batteries to full capacity ahead of the end of August. Things will be crazy again before I know it!

Currently...

Watching: Brett and I are planning to start the new season of Are You the One? when we get home tonight and I am SO EXCITED FOR IT. I've been saying since I started watching that it would make the show 100,000x better if all the contestants could be anyone's Perfect Match so this season is going to be FIRE. πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

Listening: I'm loving the song Lovers by Anna of the North. Such a beautiful, chill track!

Reading: In the middle of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne and IT'S RIPPING MY HEART OUT, YOU GUYS.

Newport Marathon Training - Week 0

Here we are, staring down the barrel of another training cycle! I'm happy I was able to take about 3 months off from worrying about training (or you know... not training haha) for a marathon. It gave me some time to clear my head on the running front and focus my energies on other areas of my life that had been neglected. Doing that has really gotten me re-motivated to take on the challenge of a fall 26.2 and it is my plan to stick with my training if I have to fight tooth and nail to get it done every day!

I'll be running the Newport Marathon in October (after deferring last year) and I found a training program that I'm excited to try out from Runner's World. This is a sub-5 hour marathon trianing program and I know if I focus and push hard through this program that I can TOTALLY run sub-5. It's been a goal of mine for a while and I really want to take it seriously this time around. Training in the summer and racing in the fall is PRIME for cutting your time on race day. When you get used to running in the heat and have a cooler race, you can usually zoom. I feel like now is my time to really go for it!

I'll be using this training plan (click to enlarge):

More information on this training plan here.

Day 1 of training is this upcoming Monday! I plan to keep myself accountable with a weekly training update right here on the blog. I'll share my weekly mileage, what I'm eating, and how I'm liking the workouts. I'm going to capture that sub-5 y'all! Just gotta work hard and stay motivated any way I can. Make sure I'm not slacking. πŸ˜‰

Halfway Through June

One of the coolest murals in Melbourne.
Apparently it was *super* controversial at the time it was painted!
Personally, I think it rules.

June has been a really fun month thus far and it has been FLYING BY. I feel like summer is going to go by in a blink and I HATE IT. It always seems to go so quickly and it's my favorite time of year! πŸ˜ But that means I just need to make the most of it before students come back to campus in August and my life gets insane again. πŸ™ƒ I also want to make sure I can capture as much of the summer here on the blog or on my channel! Love me some memory keeping and I've been crap at it as of late.

One of my favorite bloggers makes it a point to dedicate a post to recapping her life every two weeks by way of the photos on her phone with a few quick lines describing what was going on at the time of snapping the picture. I often feel so much pressure to make every blog post super detailed, which makes me feel exhausted before I even open up my blogging app to start typing. I LOVE the idea of just showing a picture and writing a couple sentences. It sounds so simple but for whatever reason my super meticulous brain never thought of just taking the casual approach. WEIRD. Anywho, let's try it out and get caught up on the last couple weeks, shall we?

My favorite thing to do in the summer is to take my lunch hour outside. Our campus has a *ton* of outdoor seating which really makes taking advantage of the sunshine and fresh air easy. It's so nice to eat, take a step away from my desk, and, of course, read while taking in some rays!

After YEARS of dreaming of running this race, I finally took the plunge and registered for the 2020 Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend! The registration process was STRESSFUL, and not something I've ever done before. This is a competitive race to get into so I had to be in a waiting room right when registration opened before they allowed me to register. Cassie and I were anxiously texting back and forth waiting to be let in and after about 20 super stressful minutes we were in and registered. Cassie and I both registered for the Fairy Tale Challenge (10k + Half) and my mom registered to run the 10k with us! This is one of my bucket list races and I am SO excited to finally be participating. (Shout out to my staff for holding up a meeting for 20 minutes so I could register! πŸ˜‚)

The first day of my vacation from work fell on National Donut Day! I decided to treat myself to a morning run to a nearby Dunks for a frozen lemonade and free donut to celebrate. I love that we now live in a town that things are within walking/running distance and that the weather is nice enough to take advantage! Also, if you haven't had the frozen lemonade from Dunks, DO IT. It's honestly such an amazing treat in the hot summer months. Brett and I are both obsessed.

Kristen stopped by our place for a quick visit that night. She was in the area visiting friends over the weekend and crashed at our place the night before the festivities began. It was great seeing her, even if it was just for a few hours in the evening and morning! Luckily she will be heading our way again with her boo Jon at the end of the month and we'll be spending more time together then. Can't wait to see them both!

Later that weekend we had an impromptu Sunday Funday with a group of friends. We stopped by a local Mexican restaurant and *ALL* of us decided to partake in some Coronaritas. I'd never had one before (always wanted to try!) and I was not disappointed. It was a gorgeous day so we stayed at the restaurant for a few hours (while I got increasingly sunburned... woops) and invited folks back to our place to continue the fun before Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.*

Last week was spent down in Florida visiting my parents. I spent A LOT of time outside in the warmth. I'm fairly certain like 95% of my waking hours were spent out by the pool while we were down there! It was great to see my parents, hug Mikey, and hit up all of our favorite spots like Rita's and Hemingway's. I made it a point to try and fit in a daily swim and reading my butt off! I think it was a vacation well spent.

During our stay in FL, my mom took me to this AWESOME used bookstore which was floor-to-ceiling books. Like any used book store, there was a ton of variety in selection, but the best part was the prices. When I saw what they were charging I couldn't *not* pick out a couple of titles, even though I had already stuffed my backpack with books for the trip. There's something about finding a book you're excited to read through the thousands of books you see at a used book store. It's like striking gold!

On our last full day, my parents treated us to an airboat ride and an afternoon exploring a couple of local breweries. It was so cool going out on the airboat - one of those quintessential Florida tourist things to do! We did end up seeing a handful of alligators here and there which was super exciting. I would definitely go again to see if we could spot more!

In the afternoon we hit up Intracoastal Brewing Company (they were having a Bacon Beer Bash which was.... interesting haha) and Hell*n Blazes (which I think we all agreed was better!). We also indulged in some brisket poutine (!!!), pretzel sticks, wings, and burgers, while testing out their fantastic beers (They had a been called The Night's Watch which was a Black IPA and 8.7% Alcohol. WHAT. #taketheblack). It was a great way to end our visit. We had a lot of fun with them and it was a much needed break from our super intense work schedules.

Currently...

WATCHING: I'm re-watching Dance Moms because I'm garbage.

I am 6 year-old Mackenzie

LISTENING: I can't get enough of Lizzo at the moment. "Truth Hurts" is probably the best song ever written if we're being honest.

READING: ICYMI, I'm doing a 30 Books in 30 Days challenge! So I'm reading a lot of things. πŸ˜‚ But I'm currently working my way through Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson at the moment of writing this.

*Let's not talk about the outcome of that series... 😭

30 Books in 30 Days/SimsAThon {Week 1 Progress // June 1-7}

In order to stay on track with my big reading challenge undertaking this month, I thought I would post weekly stats and progress updates here on my blog. I'm filming weekly vlogs as well (my week 1 vlog will be uploaded later today!) so you can hear my thoughts on each book as I complete them, but for those of you like me who like to nerd out over reading stats, these blog posts will give you all the numbers from each day!

Week 1 has started this challenge off on the right foot. Things have been surprisingly manageable! While I would have liked to have completed all 9 of the books on my TBR this week, I still managed to read 7 books in 7 days and am on track for achieving my 30 book goal! I'm feeling very motivated to read and I'm looking forward to a successful week two. :)

May 2019 Reading Wrap Up! (Featuring BOTM Month, #BorrowAThon, & BookΓ©mon Badgethon 🌊πŸ”₯⚡)

May has been quite the busy month for reading! I've been loving getting back into the swing of reading on a more regular basis. It's been a struggle over the last few months but it's been great making it a priority again and having fun participating in the book community a bit more actively than I've been able to. I'm hopeful that this is a sign of things returning back to normal!

This month I had three different bookish type projects that I worked on. First off, I wanted to focus on reading some of my Book of the Month books, as I have quite a few that have gone unread, so all of my owned physical TBR books that I picked up this month were from my Book of the Month collection. You will be able to see which books are BOTM books below as I've marked them with a little "*".

I also participated in two readathons this month! This first was BookΓ©mon Badgethon, a month-long readathon created by Megan from Tome Infinity, which centered around earning badges PokΓ©mon trainer style! Each page you read and badge you earned allowed you to collect points for your team (I was obviously Team Mystic πŸ’™). I think in the future they're planning on hosting a round where you catch different PokΓ©mon and the type of badges you have will dictate which kinds of PokΓ©mon you can catch, so I'm obviously SO PUMPED for that! I collected a total of 3,332 points for Team Mystic and I am so excited for when this readathon makes its return.

And then, of course, I participated in Round 6 of #BorrowAThon! I honestly can't believe we've had 6 rounds of this readathon already, but here we are. Every time BorrowAThon comes around again I'm reminded of all of the reasons why I'm part of this bookish community. The folks who participate in this readathon are so kind and silly and fun and just always brings such joy into my life. If you watched my May Wrap Up vlog you know I've been struggling with my mental health lately, but the folks that I interact with each round of BorrowAThon make me feel so comforted and at ease in this community. UGH I love it so much. πŸ’–
