#proudadvisormoment & Currently Reading

Every now and again in this field you get rewarded with a #proudadvisormoment that fills you up and reminds you why you do the work that Higher Ed professionals do. This semester I've been lucky enough to have quite a few of those moments. In my role, I work with our student funding board, whose job it is to allocate the student activity fee to our 110+ student organizations. This job is TOUGH and they have to deal with a lot of flack from their peers and a lot of pressure from staff and administration, all on top of doing this work as a volunteer position.

This year, this group has taken on the additional responsibility of revamping all of their internal organization processes as well as launching a re-brand of the organization, all of which takes a LOT of additional time and energy. Throughout all of the work and stress, this group has THRIVED and has won Organization of the Month for October, and put on an extremely successful third annual Shark Tank event (where students can pitch new ideas to our faculty and staff "sharks" and win additional SAF money!). I am one supah proud advisor!

Here's some snaps taken after last night's Shark Tank with the board and our Sharks:

Books I'm reading this week:

Strong: A Confidence Journal for Runners and All Brave Women by Kara Goucher - Funny story about this book. I have been trying to work on my mental game when it comes to my running because it has been really lacking for the last few years. One of my favorite running blogs, The Hungry Runner Girl, suggested Let Your Mind Run by Deena Kastor and this running/confidence journal by Kara Goucher in order to learn more about the power that your mental state has when it comes to your running.. I was looking at them on Amazon a few weeks ago and put them in my cart for a potential future purchase.

Fastforward to last week, these two books popped up on my doorstep unexpectedly. Brett and I share an Amazon Prime account and it turns out that he accidentally purchased these books when he bought something else! We called it a happy accident and he was glad to get me two books that I was really wanting to read. I started reading through Strong last weekend and it's a super quick read with activities on how to grow your confidence which is something I'm always working on improving. I'm enjoying this and am hoping to give it a full blog review later this month!

These Witches Don't Burn by Isabel Sterling - Unfortunately I'm not liking this as much as I thought I would! It's more fantasy-esque than fun contemporary with a spooky vibe which I was hoping for. I'll stick with it so maybe it'll turn around.

Talking to Strangers: What We Don't Know about the People We Don't Know by Malcolm Gladwell - On the flip side, I'm REALLY enjoying this book so far! This is the common read at my job and we have a discussion scheduled for Tuesday so I figured I should start reading. It's actually be really fascinating so far. It's talking a lot about moments in history where some governments/world leaders misread one another which lead to major conflicts. I'm interested to see what else this book will explore and to discuss its topics with my colleagues across campus!

August, September, & October 2019 Reading Wrap Up

Over the last three months, reading has unfortunately fallen to the bottom of my priority list. I've learned that when I'm struggling mentally I just cannot focus on words. It's just too much for my brain to handle. So even though I love reading, the last three months have not been the biggest reading months for me. I have read quite a few audiobooks which has helped me stay reading while I do other things to keep my mind busy (like puzzling and painting, plus keeping me entertained during my super long commute!), and I did manage to finish a few physical book here and there during this time. I'm hoping to get back to my usual routine of reading physical books this month, but for now, here are the books I read in August, September, and October!

#Sub5orBust: Week 2 Training Update (October 27 - November 2, 2019)

Sunday, 10/27 → Rest (Brett's birthday!)
Monday, 10/28 → Rest
Tuesday, 10/29 → 4 mile run (treadmill)
Wednesday, 10/30 → 5 mile run (with Cassie & Abby!) + phase 1 lift + stretch + volleyball match (I basically worked out from the moment I left work til the moment I went to sleep on this day haha)
Thursday, 10/31 → Rest
Friday, 11/1 → 3 mile incline (treadmill) + phase 1 lift + stretch
Saturday, 11/2 →  8 mile run

Training this week went great! I will say my motivation dipped a bit, especially for my Friday workout. The last thing I wanted to do after work last night was go to the gym and get my workout in. I was tired and so sore from my workouts earlier in the week, so all I wanted to do was go home and curl up with Brett and some Gilmore Girls reruns. Buuuut I sucked it up and put in the work, ended up having a pretty good time, and felt proud of myself for sticking to the plan! Envisioning a potential PR in New Orleans has really been pushing me so far and I hope I can keep that goal in my mind throughout the duration of this cycle.

Wednesday I had two training partners join me for 5 miles - Cassie and her pup Abby! It was rainy, hilly, and sunlight left us fairly quickly after work, but we felt really good through all 5 miles which was really motivating. Plus Abby kept up with us the whole time! She's working on learning to behave on a leash but Cassie has this awesome running leash that is connected around her waist so it's easier to manage if Abby tries to dart away. It was great getting to run with them - it's always much more fun when you have buddies to run with!

Because I'll be volunteering at a race tomorrow morning, I decided to do my long run today. For some reason I always get a little nervous before any long run, but I was super surprised at how well I ran today! I think my strength training is already starting to pay off. I ran faster than I have in a looooong time today and wound up having a sub-10 minute average pace over the course of 8 miles. I'm honestly not sure the last time I was able to do that!

The second half of the run was quite uncomfortable, but I'm trying to get myself comfortable with being uncomfortable again. I feel like my mental game needs *a lot* of work and if I'm gonna hit a sub-5 marathon, I'm going to have runs that are going to feel uncomfortable. I NEED to have runs that will feel uncomfortable, so I can be mentally tough when my race gets uncomfortable! Here are my stats from today's run:

How did your training go this week? 🏃‍♀️
