A Sigh of Relief | Blogmas Day 27

The first thing you do when you return to Boston is stop at Dunks, obviously. Makes me think of one of my favorite SNL sketches 😂:

We are officially back in Massachusetts after a great week down in Florida. I will say that I am super relieved that the holidays are over. I don't know what it is, but it's a struggle every year and it's always the worst in the days leading up to and following Christmas. Basically it's like a weight that has been lifted off of my shoulders and I'm just excited to enjoy the rest of my vacation (I'm off until the 2nd!) and be super lazy. I essentially just want to embody this Tweet:

Last night we all went out ax throwing and it was SO FUN! It was actually a lot easier than I thought it might be. I went in with the goal of getting just one ax to stick, and I actually got quite a few! It was a great way to end the trip with the family and I would totally recommend trying it out if you haven't had the chance to yet.

Brett and I wanted to see if we could synchronize our throws and stick both of our axes and we did it! You can see how excited I was by my face in the second photo. 😂

Another successful trip down to Florida is in the books! I already have my next trip lined up for the Princess Half Marathon weekend in February so I'll just keep thinking warm thoughts until the next trip rolls around.

Photo Diary: Seaport Brewery Tour (BEDA Day 3)

A few weeks ago, our friends Kristen and Jon came up to Boston from NJ for a visit! It was Jon's first time in Boston so we thought it'd be fun to do a bit of a brewery tour around the Seaport. We had a fantastic day walking about, shared lots of good food, drinks, and lots and lots of laughter, and capped it all off with getting stuck in the middle of a thunderstorm. 😂 Here's some photos from that day back in June! Can't wait til we get to see them again. 💖

Trading One Marathon for Another

Lil Zoe taking a snooze on Sunday afternoon <3

This last week has been actually insane! That seems to have been the running theme since the spring. There's been very little time to breathe over these last few months and the last 7 days have been no different. We can start right off with Wednesday night when Brett broke his nose.

Yup. That's a thing that happened! I left the gym Wednesday night after putting in an hour on the treadmill and feeling super good about myself, and I texted Brett to let him know to let him know I was on my way home. He called me right back and let me know that during football practice that day, one of the players accidentally knocked him in the face when he was demonstrating a drill and broke his nose. :( Poor Brett! I immediately scooped him up and brought him to the emergency room where we hung out for a solid 5 hours and he got an x-ray and a referral to an ENT that he'll meet with later this week. WOOF! At least our new health insurance had kicked in a few days before he broke his nose! ;) On the real, he's fine and has been a trooper through this whole ordeal. I'm hoping he feels better soon!

I've been "training" (in the loosest sense of the word) for the Newport Marathon over these last few months, but honestly I have not made training a priority at all. Between the intensity of my job search, the business of a new academic year, and the stress of starting a new job and getting used to a new routine, training has fallen to the bottom of my list and there were many weeks where I got *maybe* one run in, and never my long run. It's been shit, to be frank, and in the past I've been able to get away with it and still manage to finish 26.2, but this time around it's just felt different.

I scheduled myself a long run for this past Saturday, knowing that the marathon was right around the corner. I originally intended to go out for 15 miles, kind of realizing that this was my last chance to run double-digit miles before race day. The first 8 miles were fine, but quickly my stomach started having issues, my legs cramped up, and I got VERY dizzy. I managed to walk/slowly jog 4 more miles before calling it quits, and I realized that Newport, unfortunately, could not happen. There was no way I was going to be ready to run 26.2 in two weeks time, having such a terrible training cycle and awful last run. Newport wasn't going to be even a little bit fun. So I decided to defer my registration to next year.

I won't lie, I was really disappointed with myself directly after finishing my run on Saturday. I felt really bad that I wasn't able to push myself physically or mentally the same way I have in past training cycles. The stars were just not aligning this time around and I felt really bummed. But after a pep talk from Brett I started to feel better, and honestly more relieved than anything that I would not have to try to fake my way through a marathon and probably feel really awful throughout the process.

I still wanted to fit in another race before the end of the year, however, and complete one more state toward my 50 Marathons in 50 States goal! After some hemming and hawing, comparing prices of flights and registrations, and making sure I can take time off of work, I landed on choosing to run the Richmond Marathon in Richmond, VA!

This will be a fun little weekend trip to Virginia in November and I honestly think it's going to be so much fun. Runner's World has named it "America's Friendliest Marathon" which I am all about, and you get some UNBELIEVEABLE swag for finishing the race, including a medal, a hat, a blanket, and a jacket! The majority of the course is nice and flat, there's plenty of course support (including party stations!) and I've heard nothing but positive things about the crowd. I'm hoping the next few weeks I can get serious about my training, actually put some miles in, and have a successful race. I've already bought my flights, so no turning back now! :P

Saturday night Brett and I headed into Boston for his cousin's wedding reception. We had to miss the ceremony because Brett had a game (which they won - wooo!) but we were glad we were able to celebrate Mike & Angela in the Boston Seaport which was SO beautiful. We danced the night away and had such a fun time hanging out with family.

With the Bride and Groom!

This week has been a really great week. Monday we surprised my boss with a post-work get together to celebrate his upcoming wedding. It was so fun to have a couple drinks and apps with my new staff and get to know them a bit better outside of the office. I'm glad I've found myself on a staff where I get along with everyone really well. It honestly makes the day to day so much easier! I also got to meet his fiancee who is so nice and we bonded over working at Seven Sisters institutions (he works at Wellesley!). I'm looking forward to more chances to bond with my colleagues outside of the office!

Last night Rob and I went to go see Aziz Ansari in Providence! He was doing a few pop up shows around the country to test out his new show, and I saw the announcement on Instagram last week and knew I had to try and go. I thought Rob would be down for a random adventure, and he was! So we bought the tickets and went last night. I've been dying to see Aziz live for years now and I'm so happy I got the chance. It was an interesting show because it was all new material that he was testing out, but I was in stitches literally the entire time and I'm excited to see what the final product will be when he releases his special!

I only have Saturday off this weekend, which will likely entail a long run, a bunch of reading for the Read Your Face Off buddy read (Beartown by Fredrik Backman - I'm really enjoying it so far!) and some video recording (#BorrowAThon announcements, anyone?) so while it may not be super relaxing, I'm hoping it's at least productive! :) I hope everyone has a fantastic rest of their week and I will check in again soon! <3

A Few of My Favorite Links {#4}

Hey everyone! Hope you're all having a fabulous week so far. I noticed that throughout my busy semester, I didn't share too many internet gems with you all. I thought that a mid-week list of internet awesomeness would be a great way to brighten up a Wednesday afternoon!

Charlie Day's Merrimack College Commencement Address

I actually was looking into the Merrimack College program a bit for graduate school, and if I had decided to go there I would have graduated this spring and witnessed this address in person! I love It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Charlie is definitely one of my favorite comedic actors of the past few years. The address he give emphasizes taking chances on yourself, that it's okay to fail, and that life after college can be scary, but it can also be awesome - exactly the kind of advice college graduates need when facing the "real world". Charlie definitely killed it!

If "Game of Thrones" Characters were Drawn by Disney

These. Are. Amazing. I mean anything that gets drawn into a Disney-esque representation is pretty awesome, but Brazillian artist Fernando Mendonça stole my GoT lovin' heart with this series. If you're a Game of Thrones lover like myself, check out the series here!

City of Boston Built in Legos

In honor of the Legoland Discovery Center opening in Somerville, Lego built a replica of the city of Boston complete with the TD Garden, Fenway Park, the Zakim Bridge, and even the Charles River! Click hereto see the whole gallery. It really is just like our lovely city! :)

GirlEatWorld

Me wanting to be this girl is the understatement of the century. For whatever reason, I've been starving all day so even just posting about this Instagrammer is making me ravenous, but I am so thrilled I came across this account. GirlEatWorld travels around the world and takes photos of what she's eating - simple as that. But being able to feature both the food and the city she is visiting in one photograph is what makes this account so facinating - and it's always done in the same style as above! I strongly encourage you to go check out her page and give her a follow - especially if you love eating as much as me!

What links are you loving this week?
Leave them in the comments! :)

Moving Forward

Sorry for the silence on this side of the blogosphere over the past week. I didn't want to clog up anyone's feeds with more emotional post about last week's events, and frankly, that was all I could think to write about. It was all that was on my mind. Judging by the lack of posts from the Boston area blogs that I read, it was probably on everyone else's minds, too.

Being so close to the explosions on Monday, and having many of my friends being just 3 miles from the craziness in Watertown on Thursday and Friday, the past week has been extremely emotionally taxing for me. Luckily, all of my loved ones are safe, both suspects are accounted for, and hopefully we can all move on and get some answers. I still can't believed this happened to my city, but Bostonians are strong people. We don't break easily. Big Papi said it best...

Moving forward from this tragedy, I have a few things coming up that I'm definitely looking forward to!

1. I'm meeting with my BSU advisor next Monday to pick out my classes for the summer and fall! As lame as this sounds, I'm excited to get back to school, especially that I'm pursuing my Master's degree. I enjoy taking classes and learning new things, so I'm excited to get back into it. (Now, let's see if I'm saying the same thing come October... o_o)

2. My race schedule is filling in quite nicely for the summer. I'm all signed up for a 15K Trail Race on Memorial Day weekend, will be running the Superhero Scramble in June, as well as lacing up with my parents for the Finish at the 50 and Foam Fest 5K in July! I'm looking to add a half marathon to my schedule for June as well. It's starting to feel like I'm an in-season athlete again! :P

3. Speaking of running, I had a student approach me last week looking for an advisor for a running club he wanted to start on campus. I'm so excited that someone wants to start a running club on campus, because I've talked about wanting to start one with a few people, but was unsure how to go about it as a staff member. I'll finally have some people to run with, and a whole new group of students to connect with! :)

In times like these it's best to look to the positivity of the future. It does not help to dwell on the past.
As one of my favorite sayings goes...
You can't continue the book if you keep rereading the same chapter.

A Strange Day in Boston

I was planning on this post being a super cheerful one, telling you all about my amazing time at Marathon Monday, which is usually the best day of the year at Lasell. It sucks that some coward had to ruin a day that celebrates the strength of the human spirit in order to hurt people. I love my city and I know we'll be strong through this tragedy.

Here's the events of yesterday, from my point of view.
